Thissio station of “Metro line 1” was named after the Athens distrit called Thisseion or Thisseio. The area took its name from the nearby ancient temple of Hephaestus , who was known as Thisio . This is a very old station inaugurated in 27th of February 1869, who was refurbished for the summer Olympic Games of Athens 2004.
Thisio – Monastiraki routeis surely the smallest but also the most beautiful, as the line passes by the Roman Forum. Visitors admire the Roman Forum with the Stoa of Attalos and one of the oldest neighborhoods of Athens called Monastiraki.
Thissio is a historical railway station of Athens as it was the first station of the city. Thisio – Piraeus railway line (Line 1 of ISAP ) was also the first railway line in Greece. Thisio was a terminal station till 17th of May 1895, when the line was extended to Omonia Square station.
